The importance of lighting in your Bathroom
When it comes to designing your Bathroom, the importance of getting the lighting right is one thing that cannot be overlooked. In a bathroom it is important to have natural light, ambient light, accent lighting and task lighting to create an illuminous space that is calming and relaxing.
“Bathrooms are a space where we get ready, bath our kids and show off to our guests. As one of the most important spaces in a home, the bathroom needs to be functional for the whole family, and that includes functional lighting” says MOJO’s Interior Designer Rachelle.
NATURAL LIGHTING
The best source of lighting for a bathroom is natural light. Skylights in the ceiling, as well as large windows, can allow an abundance of light as well as frosted windows for privacy.

AMBIENT LIGHTING
Ambient lighting includes the main source of light for the room as well as downlights, pendants and wall sconces. These are an important feature adding to the overall feel of the room. Too few downlights and you won’t be able to see yourself to apply makeup, too many and the room will be lit up like a stadium.
“When planning for lighting in a bathroom it is important to ensure there is enough light dependant on the size of your room, as no one light works for every bathroom.
It is also important to take into consideration how you get ready in the morning, for example if you are doing makeup at the vanity, you don’t want a downlight directly over you casting a shadow” says Rachelle.

ACCENT LIGHTING
Accent lighting can be used to highlight features in the room. Lighting such as a pendant light next to the vanity, or strip lighting under a vanity can transform the whole room. “On trend at the moment are wall lights over a vanity and a single pendant over a bench space in a powder room to help fill the space and add an extra feature”.

TASK LIGHTING
Task lighting is for, you guessed it… lighting for specific tasks including applying makeup or shaving. This lighting can include wall sconces mounted either side of the mirror, soft lighting at face level around the mirror, and becoming more popular are the smart mirror with lighting built-in.
